The Man in the Cell is the twelfth episode of the second season of Bones.
Synopsis[]
When Booth takes Bones to jail for the identification of a corpse badly damaged in a prison fire, she finds it's a fireman's, made to resemble that of the cell's inmate, serial murderer Howard Epps. Howard has escaped prison; soon after they discover the fireman's body, he calls the Jeffersonian and tells Brennan that his actions will be directed at her and giving her clues. His ex-wife refuses help and protection from the FBI. Booth tries to put the pressure on Howard by arresting his disgusting, abusive mother Marianne Epps, with whom he has a mutually sick relationship. Later, Epps sends a box with a human heart to Angela, along with a newspaper clipping marking where she was cited as the "heart of the team". Booth and Brennan later find Caroline’s severed head in a freezer. Epps approaches Booth's son Parker at the playground and buys him an ice cream cone, only to return him unscathed. During the autopsy, Booth urges Cam to ignore protocol and cut the head open without an x-ray to hurry things along. However, when she cuts into the head, she cuts into a hidden glass vial, which releases a powder that poisons Cam leaving her near death.

- Cam was supposed to be killed in this episode, but the writers thought the tension between her and Brennan was great.
- At least according to the layout of the shop, the power to blow out the window in a huge ball of flame would've been enough to easily kill everyone inside of the leather goods store.
- The prison scenes were shot at Old Joliet Prison, aka Joliet Correctional Center (originally known as Illinois State Penitentiary, colloquially as Joliet Prison, and Joliet Penitentiary) in Joliet, Illinois. The prison was closed in 2002. In 2018, it was opened for tours.
